Max for Eigenharp

Using Max/MSP to control the Eigenharp

Display characters on the Alpha

I’m about to go on tour with The Security Project and thought it would be cool to be able to display messages on the Eigenharp from time to time. The only painful part of implementing such a feature is the creation of the “bitmaps” that represent each character to be displayed.

Fortunately, it turns out that as part of the Illuminator object for EigenD, Javascript source code is sent to a webbrowser that then allows you to enter a message that will be displayed on the Alpha as a scrolling ticker. If you look at that Javascript, they’ve created an array to represent the “bits” for most alphanumeric characters.

Even more fortunately, MaxMSP has built-in support for Javascript so I was able to borrow that chunk of code, insert it into a new Max js object and then add a few functions to display characters, vertically or horizontally. I didn’t implement scrolling as I only need to have a few characters at a time for now, but it wouldn’t be hard to add that using the ‘iter’ object.

Here’s the object to which you send your messages.

and here’s an example of how to use it.
